Fire Safety Festive Season

3 Items On Your Kid’s Christmas List Could Be A Fire Hazard!

As we prepare for the festive season, children across Australia meticulously plan their Christmas lists for Santa. Many of their lists may include smart gadgets like e-bikes, e-scooters and e-skateboards, which are tipped as some of the most popular gifts this Christmas.

It is important to use caution when purchasing these e-gadgets as they are all generally powered by lithium-ion batteries. Firefighters are concerned that several recent residential fires have been triggered by batteries powering e-gadgets, and fire occurrences are set to increase considerably over the coming years as these devices become more popular.

Overcharging and overheating can occur, especially in summer, making these batteries extremely dangerous. As recently explained by Fire & Rescue NSW, “it is not uncommon for firefighters to respond to fires caused by lithium-ion battery-powered equipment. FRNSW is urging people to do their research before purchasing, using and storing these items.”

Our e-device purchase recommendations:

1. Only purchase e-devices with an Australian Standards label and do your research before purchasing.
2. Don’t overcharge e-devices or charge them near flammable items.
3. ALWAYS follow manufacturer guidelines.
4. Don’t charge lithium-ion devices when sleeping or away from home.

Smoke alarms save lives

Our number one tip is to expect and prepare for unforeseen emergencies. With the right technology installed in your home, your family and home can be better protected. Install interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms on every level of your home and test them monthly. That may seem like a lot, but our latest technology – the  SafeLink Smoke Alarm Gateway – allows you 24/7 visibility of your smoke alarm system via your phone. You can even check your system if you’re on holiday and have your neighbour on ‘quick dial’ from the app if you get alerted to an alarm sounding.
